Our History
Bluebird Fiber began as a collection of Missouri and Illinois telephone companies, which connected to each other and to the internet, as well as other carriers beyond their service areas. These companies came together through the integration of Missouri Network Alliance, Illinois Network Alliance and Bluebird Media to provide transport services, internet access, and high speed bandwidth opportunities to communities across the Midwest. In 2014, an underground data center was acquired and created the Bluebird Underground Data Center, adding a data center facility to the Bluebird suite of services. In 2019, Bluebird Fiber was acquired by Macquarie Infrastructure Partners (“Macquarie”), a fund managed by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets, one of the world’s leading alternative asset managers. Through this acquisition, and later Bluebird’s own purchase of PEG Bandwidth, IL, Bluebird increased its fiber footprint even further, providing greater access to existing customers and reaching out to new service areas, including extending our network within Illinois, and into Iowa and Indiana.
Today, our network has over 10,600 fiber route miles of high-speed broadband and fiber-optic connections to over 82,000 on-net and near-net buildings and towers.
By leveraging our network, resources, and innovative employees, we develop broadband solutions many companies can’t accomplish. We have over 153 Points of Presence (PoP) including the major cities of Chicago, Springfield, St, Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, Tulsa, Peoria, Rockford, Bloomington, Normal and the Quad Cities.
